How a Health Crisis Turned My Life Around: Lessons From Military to Nutrition

I sat down with Don Dillon on my show to dig into his story. Don's journey is wild and real. He went from wanting to be a Navy surface warfare officer to fighting severe seizures, hacking his health, and inventing a new way to make nutrient-rich bars with sound waves. I want to share what he told me and why it matters if you care about performance, brain health, or just living better.

Why Don Joined The Military

Don joined the Navy because he wanted to serve. He had a choice between grad school and the Navy, and he picked service. He trained to be a surface warfare officer and dreamed of running fast insertion boats. He loved the camaraderie and wanted to make the Navy his career. That all changed very fast.

A Health Crisis That Changed Everything

Less than a year into the Navy, Don had a severe seizure during a briefing. He stopped breathing and his heart stopped. His buddy saved him. That was the first of many episodes. There was no family history and no clear cause at first. Doctors prescribed drugs, but the meds had terrible side effects. Don felt trapped by those drugs and by the uncertainty.

Finding Answers: Immune System and EPD

After years of searching, Don and his team found a likely cause: his immune system had crashed and was overreacting to normal things. He called it being "allergic to life." Small exposures triggered neurotoxins and seizures. The breakthrough was a treatment called enzyme potentiated desensitization (EPD). It uses tiny doses of antigens with enzymes to retrain the immune system. After the first treatment, the severe seizures stopped.

Biohacking, Nutrition, And The Ketogenic Diet

Don became an early biohacker. He experimented and found the ketogenic diet helped stop seizures so long as he slept well and stayed strict with carbs. He worked with experts and leaned on nutrients like phospholipids, CDP-choline, and more. These nutrients changed his life and form the backbone of the product he is launching.

From Kitchen Experiments To New Food Tech

Don loved making nutrient-dense food he could take anywhere. He started making bars on his kitchen counter. At food shows he met an inventor with a bench-top sound-wave process. After a long negotiation and years of engineering, they scaled the tech. What this does is form bars using sound energy instead of heat, pressure, or lots of sticky additives.

What The Sound-Wave Process Does

  • Uses sound waves to bind particles physically at the particle level.
  • Avoids high heat and harsh binders that damage nutrients.
  • Protects bioactive ingredients with microencapsulation so they reach cells more effectively.
  • Produces a great texture, melts in your mouth and crumbles like a cookie.

The Mind Bar: Neurotropic Stack In A Bar

They are launching a Mind Bar first. It's a compact no-fuss way to get brain nutrients. Here are the basic facts Don shared:

  • About 220 calories per bar.
  • 14 grams of protein.
  • Relatively high in fat & keto-friendly.
  • Bioactives like phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, CDP-choline, and a bit of caffeine.
  • Low processed sugar, chocolate peanut-butter flavor for the first launch.

They'll add a sport bar next with creatine, BCAAs, beta-alanine and electrolytes for a pregame snack. The plan is DTC for 18–24 months, hitting biohacking conferences and podcasts to reach people who want efficacy and joy from their supplements.

Keto, Carnivore, And How Don Eats

Don has been ketogenic for a while and leans mostly toward carnivore these days. He eats lots of meat and eggs and keeps carbs very low. He uses intermittent fasting and aims to eat most calories earlier in the day. He says sugar and processed carbs trigger problems for him, while strict carnivore keeps inflammation down and his brain calm.

Manufacturing, Ingredients, and Real-World Problems

Keeping production in-house has been hard work. Don told me about cacao butter shortages that drove fat costs way up. They experimented with grass-finished beef tallow and kept refining flavors and textures. The sound-wave tech helped them preserve nutrients and make a better eating experience.

Final Thoughts And Why This Matters

Don's story is about grit and curiosity. He used biohacking, diet, immune science, and novel manufacturing to solve big personal problems and build products that help others. If you care about sustained energy, brain health, or better ways to get real nutrients on the go, what he's building is worth watching.

FAQ

Q: What caused Don's seizures?

A: His immune system crashed and started overreacting to common antigens. Neurotoxins built up and triggered seizures.

Q: What is EPD?

A: Enzyme potentiated desensitization. It uses tiny antigen doses plus enzymes to retrain the immune system and increase T-suppressor cell function.

Q: Are the bars keto-friendly?

A: Yes. The Mind Bar is high fat, low sugar, and has limited carbs. Strict keto users should limit quantity accordingly.

Q: Does the sound-wave process change nutrients?

A: No. It gently binds particles without high heat. It uses microencapsulation to protect bioactives and improve delivery.
