I'm Robert Sikes, and in this episode sit down with Ryan Munsey. Ryan is a performance optimization specialist and a true outdoorsman. We talk hunting, training, keto in the backcountry, building a business with integrity, family, and the habits that keep you sharp. Below I share the highlights, lessons, and practical takeaways I walked away with from our conversation.
Ryan grew up hunting and now chases big western game like elk and mule deer. He loves backcountry hunts where you live out of a pack, find water, and carry everything. Those trips test your body and your mind. He told me how one trip taught him a lesson: if you don't train for the mountains you will regret it. He trains for strength, runs trails, and builds the cardio and agility needed to pack out animals.
He also loves the reset of being off-grid. No cell phones, no email. He said it gives him a new appreciation for running water, heat, and refrigeration. That unplug matters for his mental reset.
Ryan and I both have used aspects of the ketogenic diet for hunting. I shared with him how I eat one or two Keto Bricks a day on long trips as well as bring canned tuna, carnivore bar snacks, and meat sticks. The benefits he and I talked about:
We talked numbers: a gram of fat has nine calories, a gram of carb has four. That matters when every ounce counts in your pack. Ryan also pointed out that if you're already carrying body fat and you're fat adapted, you essentially have a massive fuel tank on your frame.
Family, Routine, And The Tension of Founder Life
Ryan and I both balance building a business with family. We both agree: creators and founders need recovery. You can't pour from an empty cup. Rest fuels creativity and keeps you effective where it matters most.
One of the best parts of our talk was the practical approach to toughness. Ryan lives by questions like, "Is this the husband I want to be?" Asking the question makes the right choice obvious. He also mentioned the science idea that doing small hard things strengthens a part of the brain tied to grit.
"Align your choices with your values."
That line sums up how he runs his life and business.
1. Choose uncomfortable small things: take stairs, park far, do the dishes, unload the truck. It builds the grit muscle.
2. Prepare simple, dense food for trips: Keto Bricks, dehydrated meat, meat sticks.
3. Protect creative blocks: set two to three mornings a week for real work.
4. Be transparent: Be open with customers and hire people you trust.
Ryan is a mix of rugged outdoorsman, careful business owner, and thoughtful dad. His lessons are simple: train for what you love, eat like you mean it, build a business of integrity, and protect the things that matter: family and health. If you want real stamina in the mountains or in business, those habits win.
