The Hidden Challenges of Parenting: Lessons We Learned Along the Way

Today I want to share a special conversation I had with my father-in-law, Clint Love. This chat was raw, honest, and full of stories about family, health, and what really matters in life. Clint is an incredible man, and hearing his journey, from overcoming serious injuries to embracing a ketogenic diet, was inspiring. Plus, we talked about family dynamics, golf, and even some fun behind-the-scenes moments. So, pull up a chair and join me as I dive into this memorable talk.

Meeting Clint Love: The Man Behind the Stories

Clint has lived a life full of hard work, love, and resilience. He's been in construction his whole life and is a master craftsman. But a few years ago, he had a tough fall from a ladder that changed everything. He broke both feet in multiple places, messed up his knees, and had rotator cuff surgery. For someone whose job is physical, being immobile for a year was a huge challenge.

After this injury, Clint decided it was time to get serious about his health. That's when he started the ketogenic diet about five years ago, with some help from my wife, Crystal, and me. It was a big change, but it helped him lose nearly 100 pounds, from 260 pounds down to about 180. Seeing him now, he looks healthier and happier than ever.

The Keto Journey: From Injury to Health

Clint's keto journey wasn't just about losing weight; it was about regaining control of his life. When he started, Crystal and I helped him learn how to shop, count macros, and understand what foods to eat. We even gave him a workout plan to help strengthen his body after surgery.

He kept up with the keto lifestyle for about a year, carefully tracking his food intake. Eventually, he stopped weighing everything but stuck to the same healthy habits. Clint says he's mostly keto carnivore now, sticking to meat and fats, but he admits sometimes he slips up with fried foods and notices how it affects him.

One of the biggest benefits Clint noticed was a decrease in his psoriasis symptoms. His skin used to be pretty beat up, but now it's much better. He also feels less stressed, which probably helps too.

Family First: Raising Crystal and the Love Family Dynamics

Talking about family was one of the best parts of our conversation. Clint raised three kids: Chad, Heather, and Crystal (my wife). He described Crystal as "his other boy" because she shares a lot of traits with her older brother Chad. They're both tough, resilient, and love working with their hands.

Clint shared some touching memories about raising the kids, especially after the loss of their birth mother when Crystal was just five years old. Each child handled that loss differently. Chad struggled a lot, Heather became the caretaker, and Crystal showed resilience in her own unique way.

We also joked about the little things, like how Crystal is super particular about her socks and hates fidgeting, while I couldn't care less about his socks being mismatched or inside out. These small quirks make family life colorful and fun.

Parenting Styles and Relationships

Clint and I also talked about how Crystal and I have very different personalities. She's a nurturing homebody, and I'm more of a busy guy working on the business. But our differences complement each other well, and we both share core values.

Clint emphasized how important it is to understand and support each other in relationships. He said that sometimes one person might be doing 70% of the work while the other is at 30%, and it's okay to step in and help each other out. Listening is key. For example, Clint listens more than he talks, especially with his wife Julie, who likes to talk things through.

We laughed about how men and women handle problems differently. Men want to fix things quickly, while women often want to think and talk about them longer. This difference can cause some funny but important misunderstandings in relationships.

Golfing, Family Reunions, and Fun Times

Aside from health and family, we talked a lot about golf. Clint is an avid golfer, and he's been teaching my son Rigel how to play. We've spent some great times hitting golf balls and enjoying the outdoors together. Clint has golfed only a handful of times in his life, but he's picked it up quickly and loves the experience.

We even shared a story about a fancy golf trip Clint took for his sixtieth birthday to a PGA Tour-quality course in Missouri. The trip included a Native American history museum, a steakhouse with bagpipes playing as the sun set, and some amazing cowboy ribeye steaks. It sounded like such a memorable experience.

Family reunions are also a big deal for the Loves. We had a great time in Oregon for a reunion with cabins, float trips, and lots of kids running around. Clint has fifteen grandkids, mostly boys, which makes for a lively household full of energy and testosterone!

Chad's Amazing Story

One story Clint shared that really stuck with me was about his son Chad, who lost part of his dominant hand in a sawmill accident at 18. Despite this, Chad has continued working in woodworking and does everything with one hand, amazing everyone with his skill and determination. It's a powerful example of resilience and strength.

Food, Cooking, and Family Traditions

Of course, we talked about food, especially steak! Clint gave me the nod for cooking the best steaks in the family, though he's also enjoyed some unique dishes from other son-in-laws like Joseph, who is an avid hunter and cooks bear meat.

We also reminisced about southern cooking from Clint's family, including some funny memories of canned ham covered in maple syrup for Thanksgiving. Clint's family eats everything on their plate and doesn't waste food, which is a lesson he's passed on.

Crystal, however, is a bit pickier than Clint or Chad when it comes to food, especially lamb, which she doesn't like. That's just part of family quirks!

Why Family Matters Most

Throughout our conversation, one thing was clear: family is everything. Clint talked about how important it is to make time for family, even when life gets busy. He believes in coming together regularly, whether for reunions, golf days, or just hanging out.

He also shared his appreciation for the in-laws and how relationships have grown stronger over time. As families grow and change, the bond deepens, and it's worth making intentional efforts to stay connected.

Final Thoughts: Lessons From Clint Love

Talking with Clint reminded me of how important resilience, love, and family really are. His journey through injury, health changes, and family life shows that with support and determination, we can overcome tough challenges.

Clint's story about keto and his health transformation is inspiring for anyone looking to improve their life. His approach to relationships and family dynamics teaches us to listen, support, and embrace our differences.

And, of course, the fun moments, golfing, cooking, and family jokes, show that life is meant to be enjoyed with the people we love.
